Extreme Home Makeover Needed!

They say you get this "nesting" urge at the end of your second trimester of pregnancy, this new burst of energy to create a better home for the new baby, and do all those things you know you won't have time to do for months. Well, I'm definitely feeling the need to work on our nest. It's a bit complicated since we will eventually have two domiciles ("city" and village). Our village house plans are coming along... floor plans drawn and we're hoping to lay the foundation in the next few weeks so it will have time to settle in the first month or two after the baby is born (and we are in the city). So that leaves our "city" house.
I say "city" in quotes since we're actually in the hills, about a 20 minute drive from the office where Mark serves our colleagues part time in administration. Not so city, though, since the chickens abound in our neighborhood (as do the stray cats and dogs). This house is a great provision in many ways, since the rent is a third of what we'd pay in the city, and there's lots of floor space and green outside for when the boys need to run and play. The downside is that it does have a large dose of personality.
I have to confess, I have this thing about matching. I've always been picky about matching clothes, so the color contrasts in this house do give me pause. The main room downstairs is a case in point. (Word to the wise... never give your teenage girls full freedom to decorate a room. This work of art was done for youth group gatherings... I think... from the colleagues who lived here previously. I can't say much since we still have a purple bathroom with orange trim and black neon colored gift wrap paper pasted to the walls in the "kids" bathroom at my parents' house).
HELP! Some friends are coming over this Sat to do some painting (Abe's room, some touch up in the kitchen, and this room). We still haven't settled on what color is best though, especially for this room. It has a long shoebox feel, with one window in the door on the end (our front door which opens to a car porch). Sea breeze greenish is a possibility, or I was thinking of one red wall. It's hard to imagine what would look nice considering I have the current pattern seared in my mind.
OK, so I ramble. Feel free to look at the rest of the house. Any "happy nesting" advice you have is welcome. (And my apologies for the mess... we are obviously still half in "moving mode"). Click on the picture below for a short house "tour."
(Note: pic above is of Abe's new "military hairdo." He wasn't in the happiest of moods when we got his haircut last week, so the clippers took control).

Really, Abe just takes my breath away he is just sooo stinkin cute! I think he looks a bit like your dad...has anyone ever said that?

Anyway, as far as home improvements, I'm afraid I'm spent...free of ideas since we've been doing a bit of home improvement! Check our our blog if you want to steel some of mine? mostly on the cheap...paint is the best way like that, I will say! Maybe a blue and brown for a boys room? I love those colors....

You're right, D, Abe often reminds me of my dad, especially with his expressions. Amazing how similar they can be even when they're so far apart.

Yes, paint will change much. Don't know if you saw that email--I think less break-up in pychadelic room would create peace. So, perhaps to paint walls a solid something (off-white?), but you could add grass blades along bottom foot for flash of color which eye could follow (i.e., spring green).
I'm w/ D. on blue for boys. Maybe painting one wall would be less work/ good contrast in their room.
Happy prepping!

Abe really does look like father. Has same gufawing tendencies. Daddy would be pleasantly surprised at the similarity.

My house is well-painted these days. And by well I mean thoroughly. I'm working on a full-room mural of Narnia in the girls' bedroom. I'm not putting characters in (because I can't do them) but I'm doing the scenery. That flooring is impressively chaotic!! I'd probably go with just a solid color above it. I'm a big fan of red, but a whole room of it tends to close it up. My BR is light brown with one red wall. I do have an idea on those dressers!! Sand them to where there's no gloss left, prime them, and then paint them with an oil-based high gloss enamel (I would do either mocha or white). That'll wear the best with the boys!! You could paint the ceiling of the bathroom blue...that would finish off the sky and grass look!! ;-)

Rachel, I'm with you, I can't imagine possibilites for a room, usually all I can "see" is what it already looks like. But I love to see what others do with interior decorating.
We managed to "do" one room in our house in PLR ... our huge, air-conditioned master bedroom. The "country beige" paint we bought turned out to be goldish, but it looked quite nice with the dark brown trim and closets. With a batik spread on our bed, that room became an oasis of aesthetic rest as well as, of cool temps. I sure hope you have equal success with your LR!
Actually I kind of like the naturalistic browns on the floor. I agree that a beige, light brown, or darkish red on the walls would look good with that.
Does Abe still sleep in his Pack-N-Play? Little D has just about outgrown his.
