Market Day

Friday is market day, when mommy and Abe in his baby buggy walk to the morning vegetable & fish market and do our "fresh foods" shopping for the week. So, this morning we made our usual rounds and finished with a breakfast of egg chapatis, Dahl and "pulled tea." (Daddy usually meets us at the chapati stand in the market on his way to language school). Jenny, one of Abe's adopted Asian grandmas, often meets us at the market, and sometimes I follow her to her house for a local cooking class. Jenny is the local Julia Child. Her favorite thing is food, and she describes little chilies and plump eggplants with all the affection and joy that a Greek chef would ascribe to fine Mediterranean olives. I've also included some pics from last month of a wedding we attended with Jenny in her neighborhood. (Click slideshow view for captions).

Grandma Martha update: Thank you to all of you who have been praying for my mom's healing. I've been digging into verses on faith lately, reminding my heart and my mind that our God is the one who calms the raging storms (the kind that really can drown us, Luke 8) and goes before us, conquering the giants we face. He is up to the challenge.

Mom's oncology report confirmed the cancer in her bones, and revealed a suspicious mass in her liver that is possibly cancerous. She meets with the radiologist today to determine a course of radiation. She has also begun drug treatment (a newer drug called Femerol). Please pray that mom will have peace and confidence about the right treatment, that her immune system will stay strong, and that she will continue to have sufficient sleep. (She has begun sleeping well the past couple nights).

I love this passage as a promise for mom. She and dad have always had a heart for the poor, and have endeavored to show God's kindness in tangible way to those in need.
"Oh, the joys of those who are kind to the poor! The Lord rescues them when they are in trouble. The Lord protects them and keeps them alive. He gives them prosperity in the land and rescues them from their enemies. The Lord nurses them when they are sick and restores them to health." Psalm 41:1-3
